In recent weeks, we’ve seen the rise of a pair of unusual builds for Assassination Rogues and Balance Druids, both of which end up abandoning core abilities like Solar Wrath, Lunar Strike, and Mutilate in favor of Moonfire and Fan of Knives spam. While player ingenuity often devises interesting and unexpected ways of optimizing performance, in this case the resulting gameplay became one-dimensional, and we’ve heard feedback to that effect. As a result, with the upcoming weekly resets in each region, starting on Tuesday, January 9, we’ll be making some targeted changes to reinforce the core rotational abilities of these two specializations, with only a minimal effect on overall balance:

    Druid

    • Balance
      • Wax and Wane (Artifact trait) damage bonus per stack reduced to 6% (was 25%).
      • Lunar Strike damage increased by 8%.
      • Solar Wrath damage increased by 8%.

    Rogue

    • Assassination
      • Mutilate damage increased by 20%.
      • Balanced Blades (Artifact trait) bonus increased to 4% per point (was 2% per point).
      • Poison Knives (Artifact trait) reduced to 3% per point (was 4% per point).
      • Deadly Poison triggered instant damage increased by 15%.

Thank you very much for all of your feedback. I can't overstate how much we appreciate the valuable class discussion taking place here and elsewhere.

In general, we’ve found that our tuning on trinkets which relied on a direct damage or healing effect (as opposed to their raw stats) have come up a bit short this expansion. To help address that, we’re making the following changes:

    • Claw of the Crystalline Scorpid: Damage increased by 30%.
    • Arcanogolem Digit: Damage increased by 30%.
    • Entwined Elemental Foci: The amount of Critical Strike, Mastery, and Haste granted by this item’s proc has been increased by 5%.
    • Might of Krosus: Base damage reduced by 25%, but is now always a critical strike.
      • The tooltip for Might of Krosus will display the amount of damage that will result from the critical hit, not the base damage.
      • Also fixed a bug where the cooldown was incorrectly being reduced if Might of Krosus damaged at least 3 targets.
    • Draught of Souls: The Use effect of this trinket now respects the global cooldown.
      • The damage of this trinket is now reduced by 30% for Unholy Death Knights (was reduced by 40%).
      • Designer Notes: Since Draught of Souls deals Shadow Damage, it’s increased by Unholy’s Mastery, which means we needed to reduce its base damage to keep its overall value similar to other classes. It’s currently a little too low, however, so we’re increasing the damage it deals for Unholy.
    • Icon of Rot: Damage increased by 40%.
    • Pharamere's Forbidden Grimoire: Damage increased by 85%.
    • Fury of the Burning Sky: Damage increased by 40%.
    • Star Gate: Damage increased by 30%.
    • Aluriel's Mirror: Healing-over-time amount increased by 140%. Detonation effect reduced by 35%.
      • Designer Notes: Aluriel’s Mirror’s detonation effect is strong when it activates, but hard to rely on. We’re increasing the heal-over-time effect significantly to improve the up-front value of this trinket, and reducing the detonation effect slightly to compensate.
    • Perfectly Preserved Cake: Absorb amount increased by 140%.
    • Etraeus' Celestial Map: The amount of Critical Strike, Mastery, and Haste granted by this item’s proc has been increased by 5%.

As for Convergence of Fates, we’re spending a little extra time to make sure our changes here are as comprehensive as possible, so we don’t have final numbers yet. However, we can share our overall plan for the changes we intend to make. We intend to reduce its base effectiveness (before talents) for Windwalkers, and increase its base effectiveness for Retribution Paladins and Frost and Unholy Death Knights. Separately, we plan to adjust its effectiveness individually for the following talents:

    • Serenity (Windwalker)
    • Crusade (Retribution Paladin)
    • Incarnation (Feral Druid)
    • Hungering Rune Weapon (Frost Death Knight)
    • Dark Arbiter (Unholy Death Knight)

We’re planning to make these changes with the next weekly restarts, alongside the release of Mythic Nighthold. Overall, this should make the trinkets in Nighthold more competitive with other trinkets available elsewhere in the expansion.

    Achievements

    • Broken Isles Pathfinder Rank 1 now properly displays the amount of the mounted speed increase.

    Classes

Developers’ Notes: As we discussed last week, we’ve been gathering a massive amount of data based on how each spec has been performing in this first week of raids and Mythic Keystone dungeons, so that we can make a number of tuning changes with next week’s realm maintenance. The overall goal of these changes is to buff up some underperforming specs while also reining in a couple of over-performers, without dramatically changing anyone’s playstyle or causing them to feel as though the spec they chose to focus on became the “wrong choice.”

All of these class changes will be applied during the next scheduled weekly maintenance period in each region. Note that there are also a number of PvP-specific changes, which are noted separately below.

    Death Knight

    • Frost
      • Remorseless Winter damage increased by 50%.
      • Obliterate damage increased by 19%.
      • Frost Strike damage increased by 12%.

      • Frostscythe (Talent) damage increased by 13%.
      • Frozen Pulse (Talent) damage increased by 11%.
      • Breath of Sindragosa (Talent) damage increased by 17%.

    Demon Hunter

    • Havoc
      • Throw Glaive damage reduced by 30%.
      • Fel Mastery (Talent) damage bonus to Fel Rush reduced to 30%.
      • Bloodlet (Talent) now deals 100% of initial Throw Glaive damage.
      • Fury of the Illidari (Artifact Ability) damage reduced by 20%.
        • Note: See below for for additional PvP tuning adjustments to Fury of the Illidari.
      • Balanced Blades (Artifact Trait) damage bonus to Blade Dance reduced to 3% per target.
    • Vengeance
      • Mastery now provides 50% less damage reduction per point.
      • Demon Spikes damage reduction increased to 20%.
        • Note: Gearing heavily for Mastery was allowing Vengeance Demon Hunters to reach excessively high levels of Physical damage reduction. We’re reducing the top-end potential of this effect somewhat, and bringing up the baseline. This should also cause the value of Mastery to be more in line with other stats.

    Druid

    • Moonfire (non-Feral) damage increased by 10%.
    • Balance
      • Sunfire damage increased by 10%.
      • Starfall damage increased by 10%.
      • Lunar Strike damage increased by 5%.
      • Solar Wrath damage increased by 5%.

    • Shadow
      • Mind Sear damage and Insanity generation increased by 50%.
      • Voidform stacks no longer increase while Dispersion and Void Torrent are active.
        • Note: These abilities prevent Insanity drain from increasing while active, which effectively reduces the Insanity drain for the entire remainder the current Voidform. This was proving to be too powerful, so we’re now making sure that the damage bonus and Insanity drain from Voidform remain in sync.
      • The benefit of Mass Hysteria (Artifact Trait) is now capped at 100%.
        • Note: We want it to be rewarding when you’re able to maintain Surrender to Madness for an extremely long time, but the amount of damage this trait was contributing in those circumstances was excessive.

    Rogue

    • Death From Above (Talent) area damage increased by 100%.
    • Assassination
      • Deadly Poison damage increased by 30%.
      • Fan of Knives damage increased by 30%.

    Items

    • Damage from Potion of the Old War and Potion of Deadly Grace reduced by 33%.
      • Developers’ Notes: Previously, we significantly buffed the damage of these potions, but then discovered some bugs that were significantly reducing their effective damage. Now that those bugs have been fixed, their damage contribution is much too high. They should still feel very rewarding to use, but we’re bringing them back down to Earth a little.

    • A new Archaeology Quests aura is now displayed while you’re on an Archaeology quest in your current zone.
      • Developers’ Notes: This is to make sure you’re aware of how many days you have left to complete a large Archaeology project before it expires. We’re investigating ways to provide this in the quest tracker and quest log.
    • Aodh Witherpetal will no longer become stuck during “DANGER: Aodh Witherpetal”.

Hey all. For those who don't know me, I’m Chadd Nervig, aka @Celestalon, a Technical Game Designer on WoW, on the Systems Design team. I focus on class design, especially balance and tuning. I've been posting a lot over in the Theorycrafting thread up until a few weeks ago, when I got extremely busy for a while. I’m going to catch up on that thread, and also start responding to feedback in many other threads in the Beta forums. Please understand, though, that I'll be trying to respond to feedback from 34 different specs, and have limited time, so I won't be able to get to everyone. And again, I’m merely part of a whole team that works on this, not the only one.

So, where are we at on class design? We’re to the point where we're pretty confident in each spec’s ability set, and so we're switching over to focusing on bugfixes, stability, and polish. Mechanical changes from now on will primarily be to solve tuning problems, or where there is a dire need of change for gameplay reasons. We've made a lot of changes for Warlords, and many are controversial. We'll be tweaking things in the future based on feedback and gameplay experiences.

A new beta build just went up, which includes our first round of balance tuning on tanks and damage dealers. It does NOT include tuning for healers – the first round of that should be coming in the next build. And, of course, there will be many more iterations on tuning to come. Our goal with this first round is getting the vast majority of specs to be “close” to right, as far as overall performance. Closer tuning of specific talent rows, and of secondary stats, will come the next few passes.

With this build (and the next one for healers), we feel that things are solid enough for theorycrafters to start really tearing into. I’m going to make a separate thread for the express purpose of posting theorycrafting results.

Thanks all, for all the great feedback, and please keep it coming (with a focus on tuning and balance, now)!
